Internet Security is one of the most critical parts of the computer world. Failure to keep your system protected can lead to major problems such as computer crashes, program failures, data loss, privacy invasion and personal/business account theft. It also is a major reason computers slow down or clog up the hard drive. First we will talk about prevention, then problem solving.

Prevention: Just like your medical health, computer health is based primarily on preventing problems from starting. If you take a few basic steps to secure your pc, you can greatly reduce your chances of ever being a victom of these critical situations. STEP 1: STAY CURRENT- When you first buy a computer (from just about anywhere) they normally include a free trial period of any variety of Internet Security software. You cannot let this expire! I personally recommend PC Cillin (oh and I can get you a copy that is good for 3 computers instead of 1 like the others have). STEP 2: ALLOW UPDATES- Sometimes people keep their subscription current but fail to allow critical updates to install. You must allow updates to install! STEP 3: RUN SCANS- Full scans should be run at least once a week. Each security software is different, so you may need help on setting the schedule, but by all means, You must run scans! STEP 4: FILTER SITES- There are tons of sites now that contain so many different forms of malevalent software. Enabling web site filters will keep the odds in your favor that you never even land on one. A filter is a tool that prohibts people from even being able to get on these potentially dangerous sites. You must filter your web sites!

Problem Solving: As I said before, prevention is best, however, you may find yourself already in a jam. This is where it gets extremely difficult to resolve. Once inside, malicious software can change your security settings, corrupt programs, block internet access or keep you computer from even starting up. Unfortunately, you will need all 4 of these to work in order to get a solution. If your computer cannot even boot into Windows, call for help. There is a critical error in your registry that will require a pro to resolve. These steps are only if your computer is still running in Windows. STEP 1: INTERNET SECURITY SOFTWARE- Run the first 3 steps in "Prevention". If you are unable to complete all 3 steps, call a professional. The system is damaged beyond the average user solutions. STEP 2: REMOVE MALICIOUS SOFTWARE- After running the scan, your software likely found anywhere from 10 to 2000 infected or potially harmful files. Follow the on screen prompts to delete or quarentine those items. More then likely you will not solve every problem with one software and in one shot. There is free software available on the web that can be safely downloaded and run to aid your security software. Spybot Search & Destroy and Super Anti-Spyware are decent products. However, after installing and running them, you should uninstall it before installing the next. STEP 3: DO A PERFORMANCE BOOST- Most of your problems should be resolved by now, if not, you will need to contact a professional. There may still be some software running that may not be "harmful" but it is still slowing your system up. Click here (Boost the speed of your computer for a fraction of the cost of a new one) to see how to run a Performance Boost.
